Senior Veterinarian, Metro Animal Emergency Clinic, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright and/or publishing rights held by the Canadian Veterinary Medical AssociationThis book has been a constant in my practices since I graduated 23 years ago and continues to be my go-to reference for challenging emergency and critical cases as well as a refresher source for some of the more everyday cases. While the manual is not as easy to drag around the clinic as its 1st edition predecessor, it more than makes up for that with its pertinent and comprehensive content. The new edition is 40% richer in information as it goes from 800 to over 1300 pages. There are 12 new chapters and the pre-existing chapters have been revised and updated. The new cover is orange and easily spotted in a busy ER.
The topics are presented with a brief introduction followed by pertinent diagnostics and then appropriate case management. The information is there to help with the “what” and “why,” and the “how” is laid out in an easy-to-follow format. This is essential when you’re in the middle of a backshift filled with full-moon chaos. While the title suggests that this book relates only to the emergent or critical patient, there is also a lot of information relevant to non-emergent or critical patients that all practitioners would find useful. All in all, this manual is a great resource to have in any veterinary clinic.
